Quick Previews: Southland Conference

Our conference quick previews are just quick predictions for the all-conference teams and the conference standings. If you came here looking for a deep analysis on each team, you’ve came to the wrong place. We’re too lazy to do that 🙂

The last four years, the Southland Conference might as well have been called the Stephen F Austin Conference. They’ve won the regular season title four years running, going 69-3 in conference play, and have won the last 3 conference tournaments. This year, though, the Lumberjacks reign may very well come to an end. The Lumberjacks lost the face of the program and conference in Thomas Walkup, as well as two other starters and head coach Brad Underwood, who moved onto Oklahoma State. The biggest threat to SFA’s crown looks like Sam Houston State, who returns every starter from a team that went 12-6 in conference play last season. Another contender, Northwestern State, took a huge hit in August when conference player of the year favorite Jalan West, who scored 25 points in his only game last year against Ole Miss before tearing his ACL at the end of the game, tore his ACL again on the same day he was cleared to play. West, sadly, will likely miss the entire season. That makes the Southland likely a two team race. The Lumberjacks and Bearkats, two sweet nicknames, by the way, meet each other in the beginning of February, as well as the final game of the season. We’ve got those two circled on our calendars. While thhe Beatkats will enter the season as the Southland favorite, taking down the king isn’t always easy.
