Quick Previews: Conference USA

Our conference quick previews are just quick predictions for the all-conference teams and the conference standings. If you came here looking for a deep analysis on each team, you’ve came to the wrong place. We’re too lazy to do that 🙂

This conference has cost probably millions of people lots of money the last 2 seasons. Two years ago, 14 seeded UAB upset the third seeded Iowa State Cyclones, who were playing extraordinary basketball and were a popular Final Four pick. Then last March, 15 seeded Middle Tennessee State upset maybe the most popular national champion pick in #2 Michigan State. Maybe it’s time to start giving the C-USA champion a better seed than 14 or 15 in the tournament? This season, the two favorites in the league are they two recent bracket-busters. UAB, who won 26 games and the regular season conference title last year, returns four starters. The Blazers are good enough to potentially jump into the Top 25 at some point this season. Middle Tennessee State, on the other hand, returns just two starters from last season, but those two Returners were their best players. Giddy Potts and Reggie Upshaw combine to make the most dynamic guard-big duo in the league. Outside of these two teams, look for Marshall to potentially challenge for the top league spot. The Thundering Herd return four starters from last year’s third place team, although they did lose James Kelly (20.1 PPG, 9.8 RPG). But it would be a big surprise if it isn’t UAB or Middle Tennessee representing the conference come March. And if you see if one of their names on the bracket, I’d think twice about that match-up.
