Quick Previews: Atlantic 10 Conference

Our conference quick previews are just quick predictions for the all-conference teams and the conference standings. If you came here looking for a deep analysis on each team, you’ve came to the wrong place. We’re too lazy to do that 🙂

Can the Atlantic 10 really be called a mid-major anymore? The conference has received a combined 17 NCAA Tournament bids over the past 4 seasons. In comparison, the SEC has received 14. This season, the A-10 has three really good teams and some others that could find a way into the Big Dance as well. Dayton should be considered one of the favorites, as they return 4 starters from last year’s 25 win team. That includes the dynamic backcourt of Kyle Davis, Charles Cooke and Scoochie Smith. We have the Flyers at #21 in our Preseason Top 25. The other team that should be considered a favorite is Rhode Island, who is looking to make their first NCAA Tornament of the 21st century this season. We have the Rams at #22, as they return 4 starters from last season, in addition to getting EC Matthews back. Matthews averaged 16.9 PPG in 2014-2015, but missed all of last year after tearing his ACL in the season opener. With him healthy, the Rams could potentially be the best team in the league. The third A-10 team we have in our Top 25 is VCU, who snuck in at #25. The Rams lost an exhibition game to D2 Queens of Charlotte, but we’re not too concerned. They have a bunch of key pieces back from last year’s team that almost beat Oklahoma in the Round of 32, so once they clean up the mistakes they made against Queens, they’ll be a very dangerous team. Outside of the top three teams, Davidson has the best chance to get into the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats return 4 starters from a team that won 20 games last season despite dealing with some injuries. La Salle probably isn’t ready to make the Big Dance after winning just 9 games last season, but they return everyone and got some key transfers that could vault them into the top half of the league. With all the talent returning, the A-10 could end up being one of the most dangerous leagues come March.
